Grass for Derek Jeter to play on

3/25/2013

Both the infield and outfield of Yankee Stadium are growing on 1,000 acres of green farmland in Pilesgrove, Salem County.

The farm's crop of inch-high Kentucky bluegrass is ultimately cut into 4-by-70-foot rolls of sod and shipped to what is arguably the premier address of Major League Baseball - known to some as the sport's home office.

There, it will be stomped and traipsed on by the likes of Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and other cleated millionaires.

The farm, East Coast Sod & Seed, is the field from which the field of dreams comes.

It's been providing sod for the Yankees since 2000, which means three of the last 12 World Series - held in both the old and new Yankee Stadiums - were played on Salem County grass, including the Yankees-Phillies tilt in 2009.

In January, East Coast sent 100,000 square feet of sod - two acres, worth $50,000 - to Yankee Stadium for the 2013 season, which starts April 1.

The Yankees aren't the only A-list client for East Coast, a niche farm with specialized clientele.

The farm sends sod to the Pine Valley Golf Club in Camden County, rated the No. 1 golf course in America in 2013 by Golf Magazine.

It also trucks its product to the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, sixth-best in the United States and the site in June this year of the U.S. Open. There's a legendary top-five golf course in the South that East Coast also serves, but can't - for delicate business reasons - reveal in the media.

But it's the ballpark in the Bronx that inflates pride among the employees at East Coast - as many as 50 workers during busy points in the growing season. Farm trucks bear the Yankees logo and the words Official Sod Grower.

"We send grass to baseball's biggest venue," said David Giordano, East Coast's farm manager. He adds with a grin, "People around here don't want to hear that."

Preparing St. Augustinegrass for Spring

Step 1 - Apply Fertilizer. Sod Masters recommends a fertilizer with a 2-0-1 ratio (eg…(16-0-8))

Step 2 - Help prevent the onset of Summer weeds by applying a pre-emergent herbicide. To save money, cross off step 1 and 2 together by buying a fertilizer already mixed with a pre-emergent herbicide.

Step 3 - Keep an eye out for fungus (Especially Grey-Leaf Spot and Brown Patch).  If you have had problems before or have an area with extra shade or moisture, apply a fungicide with an active ingredient. Water 1 inch per week, either from natural rainfall or from inground irrigation. Overwatering your St. Augustinegrass can lead to disease.

Step 4 - We recommend  homeowners to wait before they apply insecticide during the early stages of Spring.  Monitor your St. Augustinegrass each week for chinch bugs since they are the number 1 enemy for St. Augustine.  Chinch bugs usually start showing up in Summer through early Fall.  If you get chinch bugs, treat with an insecticide that contains Bifenthrin or Carbaryl.

Honda demos lawn mower robot at PGA Tour in Florida

Do you think this will be a hot product in the USA?

As early as last year, Honda has already announced the release in the market of its first home product. This year, the Japanese automaker’s robotic lawn mower, called Miimo, is already on sale all over Europe. But, that’s just the first step, of course.

Honda chose to demonstrate the capabilities of the Miimo during a PGA tour event that ran from February 25 to March 3 at the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens in Florida. This was aimed at testing the potential market in the country. According to Honda, it designed the Miimo so that it will need but a “minimal human interaction,” as it saves time and effort in producing a beautifully manicured lawn. This should be a perfect addition to any American household.

The Miimo operates continuously on its own, may it be mowing or charging its lithium-ion battery. It cuts grass several times every week, trimming about two to three millimeters each time. It uses sensors and a boundary wire, placed underground or around the grass of the area to be mowed, to ensure it doesn’t mow outside a designated mowing area. It also monitors its own battery level and automatically returns to a docking station when it needs recharging.
